Dreams Do Come True – My First Day On A Flight

385

Ever since I was a child I always wanted to fly. I would  see an aircraft and say, one day that will be me in there. In those days, my parents couldn’t afford the luxury of flying. Where would we be flying to anyway? It was just part of a  little girl’s dreams.

With seven children to take care of , education and other basic needs were the most important things at that time. Giving us an education was the best thing that they ever did. Each one of us went  to school. We had all the basic things we ever needed. But when it came to luxuries such as flights that was not counted. It was beyond their budget. Keep it in mind that by then there were no low cost carriers like Jambojet, Silverstone or Skyward

Flights were meant for the who was who in the society. So it became my personal ambition to fly one day. I wanted to have the feel.  I never knew how it was going to happen but something deep inside me convinced me that I would. The circumstances surrounding me at that time did not show any sort of indication that my dream would ever come true. The norm was that go to school, get good grades, get a job and have a family. The usual societal boxes that need to be checked. That was the status quo.

I went through the system, the box checking system, as usual. I went to school, got good grades and finally landed a job. Then responsibilities checked in. I pay the Government Tax and I also pay Black Tax. That is how we Africans do it. It is somehow our mandate to take care of our younger siblings. We are like second parents to them. To some extent it is fulfilling to know that you can also play a role in contributing to someone else’s success.

So when the day came for me to fly, it was a dream come true. I had not planned it. It just happened. It was a surprise. Not from anyone but from God Himself. I had not anticipated that it was going to be that soon but somehow life unfolded and I found myself on a flight. Then I remembered my childhood dream. I was deeply elated. I became emotional and shed tears of joy. I couldn’t believe it.

The seat next to me was empty and so there was no need of getting worried that someone could see me shed a tear. At this point, Paulo Coelho’s words in the Alchemist came true to me.

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

The universe had aligned all the events and circumstances for me to get my dream. I had badly wanted to fly and here I was, in an aircraft, living my dream. I now live by this word – when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. It has become my mantra. I don’t care how big or how scary my dreams are. All I do is dream, pray and work believing that someday God will grant it to me.

From that time, I have been on several flights. I am just happy that my fantasy became a reality. My miracle may be different from yours but one thing remains true. Never give up.  Pursue till the end for victory awaits you.  Keep dreaming but remember, dreaming alone is not enough, you have to work. Soon your dreams will come true. Above all put God first.
